Compatible cage mates???

SlipKorn Jan 26, 2004 09:03 PM

Would a 2 ft. yellow rat and a 2 ft. corn be compatible cage mates. I'm not sure of the sexes. Would either snake be territorial against the other or would they get along ok. I already know about not feeding together and stuff. Just wondering if they would get along. Thanks.

I certainly couldn't speak to that exact combination but I can offer some general observations from my own experience. I generally keep pairs and trios together and not had problems. There is one exception, however. I have not been successful keeping more than one male in the cage. At one point I had two pairs of yearling Everglades in a Vision 322. The two males spent a lot of time crawling on each other and posturing. I left them together for 2 days than moved the one to a separate cage. Since Rats and Corns are kissing cousins, I doubt the species difference would be relevant. Since they aren't sexed, I would definitely watch them for the first days to be sure they are reacting apprpriately. Since you indicated you are aware of the husbandry issue involved, I won't belabor those points. Have fun.

I'm gonna put my two cents in as a hearty "NO!" Too many reasons why NOT to. Hardly any good reason at all to cage those two animals together. First, you don't know the gender...Very good chance that this alone is going to cause problems or stress to one or both. These two snakes will not remain compatible in size for very long AT ALL. The yellow rat will outgrow the corn.
Health is a potential issue, as one of the posters in the general forum pointed out. Unless you are POSITIVE that BOTH snakes are perfectly healthy, you run the risk of spreading anything that one may have to the other. If cost is an issue, I would suggest an inexpensive rubbermaid or sterilite container.
Oh...How big IS the cage? Unless it's pretty big, you will want another cage soon anyway...So just get it now. Do you have both snakes right now? How are they being kept. Etc. Do yourself a favor, and get two cages. Good luck. Duffy
