A doubt about the working of loreal pit

hypnale Jan 27, 2004 02:31 AM

Hi friends,
I know that the pits ofrotallines are having a membrane inside and that they can detect heat variations. But, is it like a real image from an infra red camera, or is it just a sense of heat and cold(like ours) in a highly sensitive way?
I mean, do they get a real "R image"?
Thanks

Research into this indicates that the data provided by the Loreal Pits may be tied to the optic function creating an "overlay" of the IR data (from the loreal pits) on the optic data. This would create an image where the warm areas are highlighted visually to differentiate them from cooler areas of the image. This would be especially useful in noctournal hunting (as many Crotalids do), where optical input is not at it's optimum due to low available broad-spectrum light.
