Need help with my White's (misted with tap by accident)

Lyn Jan 27, 2004 07:35 AM

I'm concerned about my frog. I messed up big time and accidentally misted the tank (including him) with tap water. I had a large container of dechlorinated water but it was sitting out and was cold. I thought I'd be nice and use warm water and just add the special stuff by Zoo Med that I'd bought "Reptisafe" (small blue bottle). I spent a while trying to fuss with the water to get it warm but not hot, filled the bottle, then completely forgot to add the blue stuff!!! I realized it too late after I'd misted the whole tank and him. It only happened once, I've been real good to remember the Reptisafe each time since, but he's just sitting on the bottom of the tank, never on the glass, and is all brown, and looks like he has a bad patch on his back now. It's shiny compared to the rest of him. Is that from the tap water? He has stuff stuck to him all the time and it seems to bother him. He paws at it with his front and back feet. What can I do to help him. I feel so bad. When I mist the tank with the good water, should I be misting him directly? Do I need to treat him with something after the tap water incident? Do you think that's what's causing the shiny patch and him to be getting stuff stuck to him?

where are you located? if you are in an area where the tap water is quite good, then it shouldn'e be a problem. as for the sticking incident, when my frogs walk on the peat dirt they will always get it stuck on their skin, it doesn't bother or harm them. what substrate are you using?>

I'm just outside of Buffalo NY, not sure if our tap is considered good or bad. The bedding is like bed-a-beast but had a diff name and came in a brick that had to be soaked. I have that moss on top of it that they sell in the reptile department. It's more the brown stuff that sticks to him than the moss. He looked a little more green when I got home from work. I misted the tank using the Reptisafe in the water and he seems to perk up a bit when I mist him. Should I not worry about the tap misting? He won't have any long term problems from it?

i reckon he will be fine, just keep a good eye on him, if he stops eating or any other weird behaviour than start to worry, but im sure he will be fine. just try not to do it again in the future

White's tree frogs usually change color with the lighting in the room from what I have seen, so possibly with you keeping a closer eye on him and actually keeping more light on him to see him is bothering him. As for the tap water, I doubt that one spray will do much harm to him... Just be careful though because some of the water in New York can be pretty chlorinated (just like in most other big cities), so just try not to slip up again. Good luck with this problem and try not to worry yourself too much.

I have that moss on top of it that they sell in the reptile department.
The one time spray with the tap water isn't what I'd be concerned about as much as the dry moss you say you have in your tank. It can cause impaction if your frog swallows it when lungeing for crickets. I would consider removing it.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Some people even try to use chlorinated water to cure "red leg," which doesn't really work. SO one spray with some tap water shouldn't do any harm. Just make sure to use dechlor next time. It usually takes repeated exposure for long periods of time to any harm.

Thanks. He does seem to be getting better. The shiny patch has disapeared and he's slowly but surely turning more green than brown and doesn't have quite as much stuff stuck to him. Maybe it was just a combo of the new place and the tap misting. I've used the Reptisafe every time since, and hopefully he's adjusting ok to his new home.

Here's a tip
Fill a gallon jug up with water a leave it sit for a day or two, your water will then be fine to use. The chlorine in the water will have gassed out of the water.

Remember you have to leave the container open to let the gas out.

Thanks, I had done that but then thought the water was too cold, so I wanted to use warmer tap water with the dechlorinator (then forgot the dechlorinator). My house is in the mid to upper 60s. The basement where all my animals are kept is in the mid to upper 50s. I've done what I can to make it really nice down there, cleaned it up, painted the walls, put down carpet, added a heater, but it's still cold. All of my animal tanks have heat 24 hours a day. The frog tank has an UTH on the bottom, one on the side, a heat pad across the whole back, and a heat lamp that's only on during the day. But the standing water was just so cold, I didn't dare use it. He seems better now. He's turned green again instead of brown and the shiny patch is gone. He's got his first public appearance coming up on Saturday. It's Amphibian Day for our local Kid's Club. They won't handle him, he'll just be in an enclosure to be looked at. I have to figure out how to heat a small portable enclosure for the few hours he'll be out of his regular enclosure.

couldn't you warm the water that you leave sitting out in the microwave? Of course not too hot, but I don't see a reason why not.
