Tortoise Cages

evolady Jan 27, 2004 10:11 AM

I need to build some tortoise cages here quickly. I have a leopard, indian star and a red-foot. I have read a lot about their size and it all seems to contradict itself. I have talked to my local vet who takes care of my igs and he has a different measurement as well. What I am most concerned about is the height of the cage. I need at least six inches for heat and light sources but I am not sure how much height they will need. Can anyone tell me the height of their full-grown tortoise enclosure is?

Also, my vet told me that the sulcatta is actually smaller than the leopard, but everything I have read has contradicted this. Anyone have any info on that?

Are you planning on keeping them together or separated?

The Geochelone Sulcata (African Spurred Tortoise) is the largest known main-land dwelling tortoise. The Pardalis (Leopard) would be the second.

I planned to keep them seperate. The room they will be in has 7 foot ceilings. I was hoping to stack their cages and make each cage 2 ft tall or a little more. Now I am wondering if that is realistic. I don't think stacking will be a problem if the cages are built sturdy out of wood but I think 2 ft. 4 in. might not be tall enough for them. I have an indian star, leopard and a red foot. I figured the leopard would be on bottom since he will be the heaviest and the indian star on top since he will be the lightest. What do you think?

I think I've got just what you're looking for. If you email me I can send you general plans in pdf.
The dimensions can easily be adjusted.

If you plan on stacking the cages, then how will you be able to provide the correct evironment for each specific tortoise?

Redfoots need a humid evironment. How are you going to provide him humidity without affecting the other torts?

Just a thought!

I've got three Redfoots in the top 'bunk' of the setup for going on 3 years now. There are no problems at all. They are provided with a water dish that is cleaned and filled every 2 day and that seems to be enough. The humidity issue can be addressed by providing a humid hide area. There are many people who believe that you shouldn't even keep RFs in SoCal. You know how that goes.

I was hoping to enclose the cages with plexi glass. That way I can provide a humidier in the red foots cage.
