house gecko "call"??

lele Jan 27, 2004 03:31 PM

I know that some geckos can make a sound and have read it described as a 'bark' of sorts. About 4 or 5 times today I heard what sounded like a muffled "rattle" (as in rattlesnake) coming form my house geckos tank. Tia, who I got as an itty-bitty rescue is out and about a lot and Gaia - I never see. Any thoughts? Anyone know of a site that has recorded sounds?? thanks!

My guess is that like many geckos they may be beating their tail into the glass like a rattlesnake would while hunting. My tokays do it periodically.

Most geckos can growl and chirp, but individual species have a specific voice (frequency, etc.) and call. There are atleast 10 species called "house" geckos, so it would be wise to find the exact species. GGA is www.gekkota.com or do a photo search for the genera Hemidactylus and Cosymbotus for a start.

The sound I've heard which I've always attributed to house geckos (introduced feral populations) is a series of short "smacks," like the sound you get if you kiss the back of your hand 4 or 5 times.
