I am new to the hobby and are these good shows with lots of breaders and dealers?

If you are into snakes, there are some good, ethical snake breeders with high quality animals. If you are into lizards or turtles, and looking to buy, then I'd go straight to a breeder or rescue rather than the shows. I can recommend a good tortoise breeder in the area if you are looking for a tortoise.

I totally agree and just wanna add that the last N. Va show in March there were several of bearded dragon breeders/people selling em. Seriously, i'm a snake person and as i walked around the show i was like, "okay more dragons... uh huh, dragons... oooooo... wait those a color morph of dragons... wow for the size of this show there sure are a lot of beardies."
Of course that doesn't mean that these dealers were particularly ethical or were good people to buy a beardie from.
Anyways there's my hangover ramble, cheers.
