Substrate for Eumeces schneideri

triturus Jan 27, 2004 06:22 PM

I've been considering getting a pair of Berber's Skinks, (E. schneideri) and I'm not sure what substrate to use for the bottom of the terrarium. I've considered a plain sand substrate, but I am concerned about possible health issues of the skink's swallowing it. Would this be a problem? Any suggestions?

Late reply, so I don't know if this will be read or not.
I've kept my skinks on sand for about a year now. I have had no compaction problems. The only thing i've found, is they have a tendancy to kick it in the water bowl, and in the running for the sliding glass doors. Other than that, it is an excellent substrate choice. Try sticking to the medium grain sand, used for children's playboxes. Pop it in the oven at high temperature to dry it out, and when it has cooled, pop it in the vivarium.
