snake room pics

survey33 Jan 27, 2004 06:51 PM

Finally getting my snake room the way I want it. Recently got a bunch of racks and a couple of cages from Animal Plastics. Sweater box size for smaller Ball Pythons and colubrids. Jumbo sizes for Adult Ball Pythons. I am limited to just one bedroom size room so this really helps me maximize space. Also pictured are some Neodesha and snake hut cages. More pics to follow (I don't know how to post multiple pics).

Thanks for looking, Dave

I got them from Wes Harris of Morph King when he was doing business as "Snake Hut". I don't think he is producing cages anymore but I heard somebody was taking it over from him, you may want to ask MorphKing.

Awesome setup!

Where did you get your racks from? I'll be in the market for a rack system myself within the next two months.

I'll need an expandable system that will accept larger containeres as my ball pythons grow.

thanks!

You should be ashamed of yourself for making us drool over that nice setup. I would love to have the room for something like that, since I don't have the room I'll have to send my balls to you to house for me.

I'm sure I could find room for any big fat females, lol. thanks

survey33 Jan 27, 2004 09:29 PM

these racks are made by "animal plastics", they have sizes from shoebox on up to jumbo.

DexterPython Jan 27, 2004 08:35 PM

Nice setup. But shouldn't your hots be in a seperate, escape proof, room?

survey33 Jan 27, 2004 09:33 PM

I don't have any Hots. Why did you think that?

I think it would just be a matter of time before I was bitten, besides too many cool nonvenomous species for me to even want hots.

DexterPython Jan 27, 2004 10:22 PM

Ah. I saw three of the kind of enclosures that hot keepers use. My bad. :P

And I agree, far too many cool snakes that can't kill you to even bother with the ones that can.

Are you thinking of the 3 cages in the far right of the picture?

Those look to be the old Neodesha cages. I think these where some of the original commercial snake cages. The company stopped for a while and I think may have restarted up, possibly under different management. Some knock the old cages as the plastic has started to crack (my four have cracked anywhere they get high heat) but you have to realize that some of those cages are much older than any of the newer stuff. Hopefully the plastics are better now but we'll have to wait another 10 years to see what the newer cages do.

I hadn't heard of the Neodesha's being preferred by hot keepers but I guess the sliding glass might be better than a swinging door. Maybe it's just that the hot keepers have been keeping longer and own older cages. However, it did make me think of a story about visiting a friend who used to keep hots in Neodesha's. I was visiting him and he wanted to show me a pair of albino cobras he had together (for breeding I guess) in a Neodesha. He picked up two snake hooks and then slid the glass open. Both snakes launched out at the same time and he was doing his best to hook them both back as I bravely ducked out the back door. I figured he knew what he was doing and I knew I didn't have any experience and I don't think he had any more hooks so I just got out of the way. He managed to get them both back in the cage without getting bit. Not that I ever considered keeping hots but seeing the difficulty in managing a breeding pair and how aggressively they launched out of the cage made an impression on me.

Yeah, those would be the ones.

I read a site the other night that was an introduction to keeping hots, thought it was actually trying to talk people out of it. It was saying that the only way to keep hots is in the Neodesha cages because of the one piece sliding glass and the ability to still somewhat look down into the cage. Vison was the next choice but not highly recommended because of the squareness and the two piece glass was still an escape risk. I found the link to it somewhere in the Viperidae forum and can't remember what it was. But the lady that wrote it was very straight forward and highly responsible for her hots. She said that she used the Neodesha cages exclusively.

It was really a fascinating read and pretty much told me that I'd be the completely wrong type of person to own a hot snake. I'd own, say, a cobra just because of how "cool" it'd be to have a cobra. I didn't really need to site to tell me that's totally irresponsible, but I never planned on owning a hot anyway. I'm still trying to figure out why exactly people do own them, other than conservation, medical and/or educational purposes. That's a cool story about your friend, and is exactly why I'll never own hots too.

You should be proud! Looks great!

Thanks for sharing. Oddly, your room looks almost exactly like mine (I use my own racks other than Animal Plastics but other than that, almost identical). I LOVE the way the AP cage sits perfectly on top of the racks. That is incredible.
Beautiful setup and thanks again for sharing,

I don't see any wood chips or shavings on the floor. What's going on?

Thanks for sharing those photos with us. I always enjoy seeing other people's caging arrangements.
