Breeding box questions...

poisonfrog420 Jan 27, 2004 07:18 PM

I was just wondering what every one here uses as an egg laying box and medium. What I want to do is switch from cypress mulch to washed playsand. I would then push the playsand up into a corner and wet it down for an egg laying site. This method has worked great for my bearded dragons, but has any one done this with their frilleds? If I feed my frilleds in a box do you think there is a large risk of impaction due to the sand? Thanks for any ones input, Jake.

I'd combine the sand with a good amount of bed a beast, peat moss, or soil to keep more moisture and make for a better digging area. I pile a bunch up in the corner of the enclosure and that is typically where they dig. I used to give the option of the cage corner or cat litter pan, but they always chose the cage corner.
Best of luck

Do you use the sand/soil mixture for the whole cage or do you just put it on top of the cypress mulch in the corner and keep it moist? I have a door on one side of the cage, would that be a good place to put the egg laying site or should I do it in a more secluded corner of the cage? Thanks again, Jake.

I put it in one of the back corners.
I use cypress mulch in the cage and then the sand/soil mix for the lay area. I am also in a very dry climate, so sand as a substrate choice in not a good one for me.
