Rack systems

PEACHES123 Jan 27, 2004 07:58 PM

I was looking into making a rack system using the stackable rubbermaid containers but had a few questions. How do you use heat tape and does it need a thermostat? Also do you make airholes in the plastic? How do they breath. Any pictures or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes a thermostat is required, more than one is sometimes used as well.

For ventilation, use a soldering iron or something of that nature and punch holes near the top of the cage.

This is a really good post by Rob Jenkins about building an inexpensive rack. I am in the process in making one of these using the exact materials, I'm just waiting for my shipment from the bean farm (heat tape). Its recommended that you use a rheostat/dimmer and thermostat when using heat tape. The rheostat/dimmer will limit the power going to the tape and the thermostat can be used to regulate temperature. At the very least I think a rheostat/dimmer is required to keep the tape from heating up too much.
