I've fallen in love with WTFs....need setup ideas and have a question..

Tigergenesis Jan 27, 2004 08:23 PM

I've gotta get one - such cute faces!

I've been reading through some posts and made note of suggested care sheets given in some posts on this forum.

I'm trying to decide how to make my setup look. I want something nice and natural looking - but not something that will require a ton of cleaning/upkeep. Don't get me wrong, I'm not lazy or unwilling to provide the neccesary care (if you don't believe me take a look at the setups I have for my snakes). What I'm saying is that there are always simple setups on one extreme and very elaborate setups on the other end of the spectrum. I'd like something in between. I don't want to create too much work for myself - I want to be able to enjoy my little guy. I plan to just get one and house in a 20H or 29 gallon. If anyone has some pics they'd like to post to give me some ideas I'd appreciate it - I'd also be interested to know what kind of maintenance (daily, weekly, monthly, etc) is required.

Also, I've read a couple places to use bottled or dechlorinated water but not distilled. What's wrong with distilled - what kind of problems can distilled water cause? We drink (as do my snakes and do) reverse osmosis water. Would this be okay?

Thanks in advance!

It's a ...j..u..m..p.. from Uro's to tree frogs! I'll be watching this post with great interest! The distilled H20 has lost some of it's natural vits & mineral!??! That is what I've heard, I'm sure the regular Posters here will help us. I've already started with a WTF. I used a 29gal. that I set up verticaly (screen top now on the side). Use repti-safe as misting & in small water dish. White(no colors/patterns) paper towels (damp)as substrate and plenty of plastic vines & greenery. It's not spetacular... but it should do to keep him healthy while I learn more.
Good Luck,
Uro's and Frog's?

The photos are of a vivarium I set up for frogs. After the initial set up I added branches for climbing. The plantings have matured and the tank now houses 2 WTF. They seem to really like all the cover provided. The water is 6" deep, but there is plenty of places for the frogs to get in and out. Waterplants, rocks, driftwood provide access. I have seen them "bathing" in the waterfall many times and have seen them dive into the water.
The substrate is covered with live moss.
Although the initial setup was time consuming the overall maintanance is easy.
water changes every 2 weeks, plant trimming every month or so,
humidity is stable, 50-60%. Misting every week or so if tilandsia look "dry"
I pick up larger feces that are on the land portion. water is filterd and regular changes take care of water borne feces.
the water is heated and keeps a constant air temp of 80-82 deg.
The plantings and water fall provide some visual appeal while the frogs are "sleeping"
I will try to update the photos soon.
Best of luck

Just a note the photos are INITIAL set up. what they don't show is the branches that have been added and the significant plant growth since then. I will get some new shots posted soon.

How did you make your waterfall? What did you use?

Very nice! thanks for the pic and reply.

What size is your viv? What do you use to for filtration and heat?

You've surely given me some ideas. I thought setups like that were a lot more work.

here is my 70gallon WTF vivarium, its has change much since then, it is more bushy with plants. just one thing, make sure you provide your frogs with plenty of aboreal perches and hide spots. all the specs are on this link eg plants, heat source etc http://luke_zecevic.tripod.com/frogsofaustralia/id21.html

Very nice! So how do you keep the water clean - I didn't see where you have a filter. What kind of maintenance do you have to do?

Thanks for the pic!

i clean the water once every 1-2weeks, because it is a large water area the faeces and secretions of the frog diffuse in a larger body of water, therefore the water does not foul as quickly as a small water area. i clean it by sticking one of those aqurium hoses in the water and than sucking it out, you can by them at any fish shop.
