Substrate conversion success story! (Pics too!)

bluetubeodyssey Jan 27, 2004 08:58 PM

I've had my baby WTFs Cabo and Wabo for about 6 months now. When I first set up their tank, I wanted a natural look, so for substrate I chose the shredded coconut. I liked the look of their home, however a) they always had bits of the stuff sticking to them, b) whenever they went hunting for crickets they'd also get a mouthful of the stuff and spend 10 minutes trying to paw it out of their mouths, and c) it made for messy tank cleaning.

So I decided finally to convert over to paper towels, and woohoo! The tank looks very neat and tidy, Cabo and Wabo happily stalk about on the ground (before they hardly ever went on the ground, tried to stay on branches and vines), no more dirt on them or in their mouths, and cleaning up is much easier and faster! Yay! So if you're ever in doubt, I highly recommend (non-printed) paper towels for substrate.

Here's a before shot, when they had shredded coconut:

Here's how the are now!

And just for fun, this is Wabo posting as a plastic frog:

That's all, hope this helps anybody in doubt!

if you still like the idea of naturalistic then my friend came up with a novel solution:he keeps dendrobatids and didnt like his prize frogs looking like walking mud piles,so he "grew"moss all over the floor and it worked a treatJust food for thought

Yea, I originally had some moss, but after seeing them take a bite of it along with their crickets, and after reading about the danger of impaction it posed, I took it out. The tank actually looks pretty nice, and my bettas surround the outside of it so you can't really see the bottom
