It is either a Black Ratsnake that hasn't turned completely black yet or a Gray Rat x Black Rat intergrade. Either way, it is one of the subspecies of the common ratsnake (Elaphe obsoleta).
Which subspecies it is depends on where you found it.

at about what age should he turn black if he is a black ratsnake? The guy that I bought him from said that he caught him in florida I think.... he also told me that it was a greenish, but others have told me different so I thought I'd get your opinions. The snake is about 3 years old... defenitly not older than 4, and not quite 4 feet yet.
That snakes looks a little bit dark for a FL gray rat, but it could be one (they are variable). If the snake is from FL, it won't ever turn completely black.
I doesn't look like a greenish rat. By the time a greenish rat gets to that size, it almost invariably is striped. Your snake doesn't show the striping typical of most Greenish Rats I have found.
Frankly it looks a lot like the ratsnakes I used to find when I lived in South Carolina which where Black x Gray rat intergrades, basically a dark Gray Rat.

I would be inclined to rule out Florida. Looks way too dark. I think Chris has it nailed.
