questions of breeding these monitors-peachies, ackies, timors

mike13 Jan 27, 2004 09:38 PM

I am doing some research as to which species would be the best to try and breed. I have an unsexed Peachthroat now. Here are my questions.
- Is anybody out there breeding peachies with any regular success? If so, is there a formula that works and what is it?
- Are Ackies as easy and fun as everybody says? If so, when, where, and how much should they cost?
- Are Timors as timid and undesireable as I have heard? Will they breed as readily as ackies?
I have somewhat limited space, so even though I love the Peachthroats, I am looking hard at the smaller monitors. Thanks for any responses. Mike

I THINK RSG HAS HAD SOME SUCCESS BREEDING PEACHTHROATS BUT I AM NOT SURE SO DONT QUOTE ME. ROBERT BUSHNER IS CURRENTLY TRYING TO GET SOME GROUPS STARTED. TALK TO MARK BAYLESS HE HAS RECORDS OF WHO MAY HAVE BRED JOBIS.

ACKIES ARE FUN LITTLE MONITORS PEOPLE LIKE THEM BECAUSE THEYRE SMALL AND DOCILE. IN TERMS OF COST THEY ARE EVERYWHERE SINGLES CAN BE 200 TO 300 WITH GROUPS AND ADULTS COSTING MORE

MOST TIMORS ARE TIMID I DONT KNOW IF ANYONE HAS REALLY TAMED ONE DOWN BUT WHO KNOWS IF THERE ARE TAME NILES WHY NOT HAVE TAME TIMORS LOL AND THERE HAVE BEEN SOME RECENT SUCCESSFUL BREEDINGS CHECK OUT VARANUS.NL THEY HAVE SOME RECENT POSTS ABOUT TIMOR BREEDING
HOPE THIS HELPS

I have had two clutches of full term peachthroat eggs that I didn't hatch and my female recently died. I wouldn't say I have been successful breeding them.
I agree that ackies are a lot of fun, but I have been bitten by ackies more than any other monitor.
In my experience keeping timors is like keeping an empty cage.

There are tame Timors. They are rare. All the ones I've heard of are CB and even that's not a guarantee. Even after a few years my Timor is still very shy but if I'm quiet he'll let me look at him. I guess breeding them is a bit tricky, I've heard, but not impossible. I haven't tried myself but I'm considering it.

"The serpent crams itself with animal life that is often warm and vibrant, to prolong an existence in which we detect no joy and no emotion. It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."
