How Long....

IAHerper Jan 27, 2004 11:18 PM

Can my Black Blood go without ever going to the bathroom?, I have had her since Christmas(thanks to my wife and the guys at NERD)and she hasn't gone yet. Otherwise everything seems fine, eating every 7 days, spending most of the time in her wet hide, and coming out at night. One other question I have ia how long does it take for bloods to shed, shes been in shed for about a week now, and her eyez have gone blue twice.

Thanx, Terry

Bloods can go for awhile without deficating it depends on the animals individual metabolism and the amount of food you give them. If you have only had her a month it is nothing to worry about, you might want to feel around and see if there is deficate building up in her rear section. If she has alot of build up there for a long period it could be detrimental to her health. As for shedding it varies too. My large one tends to take awhile sometimes up to two weeks after going blue! Best thing to do is soak them for a little while when they start to go into shed, and when you think she is about to shed put a moist paper towel in her caging. It will increase humidity and give her something to shed on. Good luck with you new snake, and welcome to the boards.

Yes, they do have a very slow metablosism and its amazing that they don't poop more often than they actually do. Sometimes I can't believe how man mice my little Black eats and doesn't relieve himself. They will usually poop during or right after shed. My black will shed and he will poop. When your snake does poop your gonna be pretty surprised cause when they do......hahahahahahaha.

Don't start to worry just yet, keep feeding her and look out for poo when she is in shed. It smells and it should be removed ASAP. I clean out my bins every time they shed and poop.

Hope this helps ya,

Lu

Just make sure your humidity is nice and high and the snake is hydrated. Other than that... well... we all wonder where they keep it all!

It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."

Hey,
As for the bowel movement retention, that all depends on the animal. But, generally speaking, bloods and short-tails for that matter, can hold out for pretty extensive periods; mind boggling if you ask me; considering their little bodies. At any rate, I wouldn't get too worried. They usually go about every 2 months and even longer sometimes. Warm soaks and a water bowl for them to soak in while in the enclosure might help stimulate a bm.

As for the ecdysis, they are notorious for retaining longer than usual opacity periods than any other boid type that I have ever worked with, especially older animals (2years and older). They tend to be in the blue, for about 10-12 days when they are young and longer when they are older, but generally this is about right for SST's and Bloods.
