Leo diseases?

artsykitten Jun 06, 2003 11:08 PM

Is there any disease leos can get that can be passed on to chinchillas if their cages are both in the same room? across from each other?

My first leo is getting real skinny and hasnt really started eating since her usual winter fast. so i seperated her from my other 2 leos just now and have been giving her this appetite stimulant stuff. she always seems excited when i put mealies in for her, but she usually only eats one, or stalks it and looses interest right when she gets up to it. i just put her in the other room across from my baby chinchilla, and i was hopin if my leo is sick with something that it cant be passed onto the chinnie. im also hopin for a poop sample soon :P Thanks!

I'm no vet, but I'd wager it's pretty unlikely anything would be passed given there's no physical contact between the animals. Some common parasitic infections do have a direct lifecycle (meaning they can be passed on by contact with infected stools or the like), but your chinchilla would need to be playing inside the gecko's tank for that to happen.

A respiratory infection would be more likely to be transmittable, if the infection was cross-species. But it doesn't sound like that's the problem. So, I'd say as long as you observe strict hygiene before and after you handle the gecko or anything that the gecko has touched, you and your other critters should be fine.
