Cagemates for a boa?

lilbitlizz Jan 28, 2004 08:52 AM

I have a 7 foot BCI living in a 4' by 2' by 2.5' enclosure and have thoughts of getting her a cagemate...

1-Can two boas live together happily; would they have to be two females (not to breed or fight)

2-Does the second one have to be housed separately until it is of adult size so that the current one does not try to kill/eat it?

3-How much bigger if at all would the enclosure need to be?

It isn't a good idea to keep more then 1 boa per enclosure. The main reasons behind this that I know of are, if one gets ill it increases the likelyhood that both will become ill, one will more then likely put stress on the other one which will lower the feeding response and also increase the susceptability to illness, feeding seperately is required to decrease the chance of accidental feeding response on the cagemate, and also if the animals are not of the approximate same size the larger one can injure the smaller one just by moving about the enclosure.

I know there are more reasons but it is too early in the morning for me to think of them..
