That's a great shot of Mr. Nasty that Keith put up in his post!

The shot Keith had is probably about as large as they get, but I'm sure some individual snakes get to be somewhat bigger.

78 or so inches and 7 lbs would be my guess as the max. you're going to get on a Florida king unless it's an obese snake.

Everyone seems to know someone who knows someone who's seen larger kings, but the proof seems to be lacking in most cases.

The largest Florida king I've seen was about the size of the one Keith posted - it was (two years ago) at the Disney Nature Preserve outside of Orlando, run by TNC; they also have the largest Eastern/Eastern-Florida intergrade I've ever personally seen - that snake was a freakin' beast with the largest head and thickness I've ever seen on any type of kingsnake.

I'll try to find a picture of my largest Florida king, "Loco," a "brooksi" that's 64" long and about 4.5 lbs; he's about 6 years old and this will give you another shot of a large floridana. Others on here will surely put some pics up of their large Florida kings too.

Keith pretty much has it on size. of the hundreds I have seen in South Florida, the largest I caught in Davie in 1984. That male came in at 6'3" and looked very similar to the one in his photo. As I sold it, I do not know if it got any larger.

Maybe its the same one ??? I got that snake from Glades Herp back in 1998 or 1999. Rob said it was a wild longterm captive. Of course that would make that snake pretty old so I doubt it.LOL

This is a pic of our male having dinner.
We have never weighed him so I don't know about the weight.
We bought a piece of clear PVC pipe & marked it off but the bugger will NOT crawl through it. We only tried a couple times. Our next trick will be to pull a mouse through it & see if he'll follow.
Other than that, he's near impossible to get a string on so we've had everything from 71"-74", probably closer to the smaller number.
Will let you know when we figure out how to stick toothpaste in the tube. LOL
PS...Keith, that is an awesome shot. You da man.

Keith,

He was found on a salt marsh island here in Hernando County FL.
Actually, he had his girlie with him so we have a pair. She's not near his size but a great pair.
When we take them out to go to the bathroom, she is FAST (I guess cause she's small) & we have to watch her closely. He, on the other hand is SLOW moving (fat thing that he is, LOL).
Having found them on an island (much used by people so we assumed they were new residents) we were surprised to find she really does NOT like water. He however LOVES it. We find him in his water bowl quite often.

Are you planning on breeding them ? Locality Floridana are always cool ! If you do breed them mark me down for a pair.

Regards,

Keith

dayum! that thing is baaaad! is that a florida eastern? sweet snake. does drool hurt a keyboard??

TerriBerri69 Jan 29, 2004 10:38 AM

LOL
He is an Eastern Florida King caught on a salt marsh island in Hernando County FL along with his girlie friend.
She's about the same color but smaller.
The boy snake commands respect & although he is well behaved, my boyfriend Mike has been tagged by him about 4 times in the 3 years we've had them and the boy will put a hurtin on ya.
He wants what he wants when he wants it. Mike had him outside once while talking to a neighbor & the boy wanted DOWN. Mike had him wrapped around his neck & kept picking him back up & putting him back around his neck after every try by the boy to get down.
The boy finally got pissed & grabbed Mike's belly button. The neighbor flipped. "He's biting you!" Mike looked down like nothing was happening & said "yep, he is". The neighbor thought Mike insane from that day on. LOL.
