Temperature for KING SNAKES..........need some help....

cv768 Jan 28, 2004 11:32 AM

We built a rack that keeps the rubbermaids 93F on the hot side and 83F on the cold side...is this ok for Kingsnakes???

If it is too hot would making more holes in the rubbermaid help much??

Otherwise any other suggestions on reducing heat would be a big help....

We are heating the rack with rope lighting, it works perfect except a few degrees too hot i think......

We've got florida kings and cal kings arriving soon and I want to set the temps right...

Any advice would be appreciated...

WOW thats too hot. Warm side should be around 82 maybe 83 degree's. The cool side about 8-10 degree's below that. In a rack you will rarely get your coolside 10 degree's lower . The first thing you need to do is put a temp controller on that rack. It comes with a probe and you can then set it at the desired temp. The most popular brand is a Helix System. They have a few models but the cheapest on should do you well (100-150 bucks). With the temps you have now those snakes will not make it its simply too hot.Im my rack I have the warmside at 82 and the coolside is probably 75-77 degree's or so. Remember heat will kill a snake far faster than keeping them too cool.

I think we are going to drill many many holes in the aspinite we used for the back and use a soldering pen to make more air hole is the rubbermaids...hopefully that will reduce the temps substancially...I think once the holes in the back of the rack are made it should be fine...but don't worry, there are no snakes in the rack yet and there won't be until the temperatures are stable.

Thanks.

Your problem is probably not strictly air temp especially if that is the air temp. Ground temps are as dangerous as well. Dont mess around get a Helix I dont know of anybody who keeps there snakes in a rack without some kind of temp regulator.
