do mice get pregnant while breastfeeding the babies?

rudedogsurfrat Jan 28, 2004 02:53 PM

I've noticed that my momma mice are pregnant while they are bringing up fuzzies. When are they re-impregnated?
While they are pregnant, breastfeeding, or after?
Humans don't ovulate when breastfeeding.

Humans can ovulate during breast feeding. Women who are undernourished are likely to be infertile while breast feeding. In the developed world nutrition is not usually a problem, and women can get pregnant while breast feeding. Trust me on this one.

I don't have mice but my rats get pregnant again almost immediately after giving birth. They go into estrus about 3 hours after having babies. I just try to make sure that they are healthy and getting the correct food so they don't loose too much weight.

I stand corrected.
I thought I remembered from school that if a mother (human) is breast feeding they do not cycle.
I am by no means an expert.

One of those helpful tibits that can keep you sane. It doesn't sound like fun to have two babies 10 months apart unless you planned that kind of thing. I personally like about 4 years between kids so I forget what waking up a million times a night is like.

mine are every 2 yrs 10 months and we didn't plan it(we planned the kids, just not the time exactly). And yes, I was still breastfeeding one when I got pregnant with the next.
Sleep.....yeah right!
An animal would have to be very beat out before it wouldn't ovulate again. Marathon runners sometimes don't ovulate. Scary what that means it is doing to your body.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with the software.

How funny! My brother and I are exactly 22 months apart as well. Maybe its fairly common? How many kids do you have total?

My two are 3 years and 7 months apart, and we plan to maybe have one more after we buy a house in December. That means more than five years between the last two.

Yikes! 5 years seems long. It gives them enough time to analyse their sibs. That said though I have a friend who got to her youngest being 10 and decided on one last kid. He is like an only child with his next sib being 11yrs older!

I have (3) 9yo daughter, 12yo(in a few weeks) son, 15 in May son. 22 months was perfect for...the last is walking and not wanting to be carried all the time but not so old as to resent a sib. I think if I waited 5 yrs I would never want to be pregnant again.

The mother is impregnated within hours of giving birth, if she's kept with a male of course. Its hard on the female, her litter sizes start descreasing after a few months (this happened to me, anyway).. Just feed her off and raise up a new girl. Dave

rats and mice can become impregnated within 24 hours after giving birth, if the male is housed with them.

AS SOON AS my girls finish the birthing process the male is doing his business. OUCH. I'm amazed at the difference between humans and mice... and what each can hack. I thought I'd also mention that I've heard that some animals and even humans can lactate without being pregnant.
