no fat pads on head pic

beardiedragon Jan 28, 2004 02:59 PM

as you can see she is "big boned" and has been for some time. Her fat pads went away last season and never came back in.
Any thoughts?

Only thing I can think of personally is that she is older than you think. Did you raise her from a baby? How long have you had her personally? How old is she supposed to be?

Then that is strange, The only time I have seen that on an otherwise healthy dragon is on an "older" retired female breeder.

Of course I have seen it on sick, half starved, dehydrated dragons, but you have already said she is none of those LOL

she even has a bath tub in her enclosure and I see her soaking in it from time to time. She loves to run around when she comes out too. She is fast, faster than I would expect from such a round Beardie.

Her fat pads got depleted, even of fluids and collopsed. Once they do they are very hard to get built back up. Its the last place she will build back up, the tail being the first.

I ask about being gravid before this happened as that is the only time I have seen it happen on a young female. We think it is because they did not have the stored fat and fluids very long before the egg production and laying took it out of them.

I have never seen it happen to a dragon other than following laying. We see this happen with with some of the rehab dragons that become gravid shortly after recovering good health and the bio clock kicks in and starts egg production.

she never laid eggs. she was with a male and I thought she was gravid when I noticed her fat pads sinking in, especially in conjunction with her size.

and reabsorbed the eggs?

I have seen it several times happen, but only following being gravid and only in females.....we thought it related to being gravid and depleting the fat stores..... hrmm, wonder if hormones can have an effect on them?

We have notice that babies and juvies no matter how tubby they get or well they eat, do not develop the head fat pads until they reach sexual maturity... tails can get really wide, but not their head pads

We also know that upping the calcium in a gravid female not laying can encourage her to lay and they also increase weight with fluid retention when increasing calcium..... I wonder

Darn Bennett, like I need another project to work on!!!

I never saw or felt any lumps or bumps like I did with my other girls. When I saw the fat pads going down I checked her daily for weeks and nothing. Don't remember how long after it was that she started to loose weight. not a lot but it was noticeable. When I put her on pellets she plumped right back up again.

I did have a female that died with a belly full of eggs. The vet gave her calcium and we also tried something like patocin, cant remember the name, but it was to late and she was to weak and passed away.
