a couple of questions

wayne13114 Jan 28, 2004 03:47 PM

I live in an area where garter snakes are very common I can see about 30 on a normal day and probably twice as much on a good day just wondering how many other people seein different places I live in NY. I have a large aquarium i think it's a 55 and was wondering how to set up a garter snake colony and how many could I possibly put in there?
Thanks Wayne

Hello Wayne, I live in NY too, but hardly see any garters. I'm down in Westchester, in all the years I've lived here I never saw any unless I was near a reservoir, and then maybe one or two a week. You're lucky to see so many a day! What town does such a high population exist in?

To answer your second question, the general living space requirement for a single garter is at least 10 gallons, so you could ideally fit five adults, preferably less. However there are some problems with housing garters together, such as fighting over food and unexpected breeding. Also, I'd recommend checking out NYS laws about keeping wildlife, always good to know just in case.
