im concerned about my AFT

alieliza Jan 28, 2004 04:01 PM

I have a male AFT whos around a year old. We made a move about a month ago, and around the same time I switched his substrate from jungle earth to paper towels. Since the move (i dont know if it is significant or not) he hasnt eaten, at least not very much. It was colder in the house that we were at for the last month -- maybe it was too cold (but there was an undertank heater and a night light on at all times.) His bottom lip also appears to be a little red, chapped looking. Im not sure whats going on with him, and I plan on taking him to a vet, and also contacting my local reptile center, but im not sure how big of a problem this is.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like it maybe the beginning of mouth rot. If it is that could explain why he is not eating as much, it hurts him to eat. Until you can get him to the vet (and he does need a vet, alot of aft's develop problems along with mouthrot) up his heat, and try swabbing the area with diluted betadine. Make sure he is not dehydrated, keep his humidity up.

What causes mouth rot? Is it something wrong that I am doing? I have had him for almost eight months, and he has never developed any kind of problem like this before. I am being sure to keep the humidity up, and i have seen him drinking more frequently than ever. I hope I havent done anything wrong. I will look inside his mouth to see if there is anything going on in there.
