How would i keep mulch clean?.....

crazydago18 Jan 28, 2004 05:32 PM

How do you guys go about keeping the cypress mulch in your cages clean after your tegus go to the bathroom. My tegu is on carpet right now, and doing very well with it, exept for the messes he leaves me to clean up and thats pretty nasty having to clean up after a 3 ft. tegu on carpet(we all know the smell isnt to appealing). I was using the mulch a while ago and then changed back to the carpet because the mulch was giving him some mouth rot and it had to be changes out about once a week, due to the fecal matter and the sheding, which got kinda anoying.

Also does anyone know if kitty litter would be posionios to a tegu(not to injest of course)but just to go to the bathroom in.

Thanks, Nick & Slash

what i just recently did with my cage and which so far has worked out excellent, is doing the hot half of the cage in aspen bedding and the cool half (where she sleeps) in cypress mulch. For some reason she always goes to the bathroom on the hot side of the cage, she's never gone once, not even peed, on the mulch side. Cleaning up poop and pee with aspen bedding is extremely easy, and much more sanitary since it coagulates and absorbs urine. And having the sleeping side of her cage in mulch allows for proper humidity to be maintained. She's been shedding wonderfully now. Hope this helps.

How do you seperate the two beddings, Do you have a pic. Also what about the shed that falls off doesnt that go everywhere. And is that aspen a very dusty substrate.

I wouldn't say that Aspen is dusty, I use it for my snakes, not really dusty for me?

I too was wondering about the kitty litter, I Want to try and get my Tegu, litter trained and was hoping to use this method.

I might try the Aspen/Mulch mix too.
