Deadly poisonous snake in Alabama................

rearfang Jan 28, 2004 05:52 PM

CBS (Channel 4 South Florida) Just posted this story. A toddler in Alabama found and picked up a "deadly Poisnous snake" that was on/or in a bag of candy at a local store. The mother of the child knocked the snake out of the child's hands as he tried to put it in his mouth. It was identified as "a poisonous copperhead". The camera showed the snake lying on the ground-probably dead. It was a "Miami Phase Red Ratsnake. And so goes the accuracy of the evening news............

Since I moved to Alabama 4 years ago I've been stunned at the panic of folks at the mere sight of any snake regardless of size or species. Last fall I saw a grown man run to his car because a 2 foot Midland Water Snake swam by just 6 or 7 feet away from where he was fishing. (He was standing on a dock) BTW, apparently there are only 3 species of snakes that exist in this state. Anything seen within 6 miles of water is a Cottonmouth and anything seen more than 6 miles from water is a Copperhead. The only exception is if the snake is spotted near a farm. That constitutes a "Chicken Snake."
To be completely fair, I suppose if you don't know better you should leave them alone but...geez, lighten up folks.

Too funny, I'm still "LOLing"... I have a similar problem except it's that my neighboors yard is allways full of rattlesnakes and all I get are black racers? I have never been able to figure out why the dimondbacks prefer her property. Later on-Brett
