Jesus Christ...this is absolutley awful..dying baby Sav at Petco..

The_Reptile_Boy Jun 07, 2003 01:56 AM

I was appauled to see a Sav today that could not even walk, he made vain attempts to walk, collapsed everytime, his cage was only 80 degrees, he had a healthy looking partner, but he was as thin as a twig, no joke. He finally collapsed on his log after slowly climbing up,he`s dying...he didn`t move after that, even when the other one stepped on him. I would give anything to buy him, just to try to nurse him back to health. But he was 44.99 instead of 24.00, I was so pissed. Anyone who thinks they could rescue it, or know what I should do, let me know. Poor thing...

And please, do not "save" it. You will just create a demand to have another wild baby to suffer in its place.

Your heart is in the right place, just the wrong direction. Care about the many others that would like to stay wild. This one was doomed a long time ago. Spending your money on it now, will not help you, help it, or help the future ones. The only one who will be happy, are the ones making money off its life.

Sorry you are so sad. Me too. D.

I agree. Poor little baby. I`m going in there tomorrow to tell them. The fixtures for thm are so in-addiquate! I gotta do something if I can`t save it`s life, I can still save the lives of others.

This is happening all over, i went to a local fleamarket to which when i got to them rptile vendors i was distraught to see yet another badly kept Sav, Reticulated python, Armidillo lizards and garter snakes. It is sad to think that the ones that care the most about these poor animals are so helpless to do anything about their situation

That`s so true. Wich is why as soon as I get a goos, supportive job in the not to distant future, I am going to specialize in breeding Savannah Monitors, and try to ban wild imports. That way, you get healthy, well kept Savs for the same price, without the damage to the wild populations. I will of course wait till I know exactly what I`m doing. And I know I`ll end putting them through a hell of a screening, but hey, its all for the Savs sake. Anyone here find specifying in Savannah Monitor captive breeding a good idea? That and the other wild imported. Like Black,a nd White throats.

Feel free to breed, but don't try and get ANYTHING banned. Those sorts of laws open the floodgates and get all of our pets taken away. Besides, if only a few people are breeding savs, and imports get banned, what's going to happen to the monitor gene pool? Imports are an unfortunately necessary part of the exotic herp hobby, but they shouldn't be abused and then sold to newbies. I'm not sure exactly what the answer is, but banning importation isn't going to accomplish it.

The_Reptile_Boy Jun 08, 2003 02:05 PM

Well, it came out wrong. I meant limit import. Not ban. Whoops, heh heh. I make mistakes. Anyway, I`ll make damn sure I follow every rule for them. They won`t get banned, because I`ll have alot of room for them. I don`t plan to start till I can really handle it.

If importers had to pay a $50 tax to import each animal, then it would dramically decrease the harsh treatment of these animals. The price would drive away impulsive purchases but still keep the price within reach of anyone who is serious about buying one. It probably wouldn't work, but what do you guys think? is it a good idea?

All we need is to be funneling more money into the government coffers, so they can create more 'programs' and control more of our activities.

Why would you trust a politician to control that tax, once you open the door with allowing taxation it is treated as another revenue source. Look at the US income tax history, social security, etc, etc....

The road to hell is paved with good intentions, government control is a bad thing and never the answer, whether it be taxation or 'bans'.
