as long as it is a good professional high quality product. I use Iams chicken flavored canned cat food, Award home style canned dog food (assorted flavors), and whatever else seems good at the time.

Iams is my favorite for quality & texture of canned food. I used Science Diet this last time, but found the texture a little to firm for good mixing w/ the other ingredients of his diet. I've also used Pedigree, but didn't feel that it was as good a quality as the Iams. I've used Iams Chicken & Rice when I've used it.

I ve read that cat food is too rich in protein for BTS.When i give my 2 BTS food that are very rich in protein their urates become too dry and the amount of urine is reduced.
My BTS-both- love raw chicken and raw beef meat. Thats what they like most and thats almost all they eat.Sometimes i give them boiled eggs and bananas. As they are really doing great, fat, big, happy and healthy, i dont intend to change their diet!

I am glad someone sees the flaw in that logic. For some reason it has gotten out that there are food items that are too high in protien. This is not the case. There may be diets that are too high in protien, meaning that there is not enough plant matter in the diet. But when dealing with the protien aspect of their diet, you can't get too much. And What do people think is in dog food, crickets, or chicken. The answer is protien. These items are loaded with it, and they are good, just as cat food can be good too.

I used to give sardines and tuna (without sauce or oil) to Mega, my 3 years old MTS, and i noticed that although she loved that and eat a lot, after eating that she had difficulty to expel the urates which became very hard. Almost like a small egg!The same thing happened when she ate cat food and checking the cat food boxes i noticed the protein level is higher than adult dog food(dont ask me why!lol!).

But this doesnt happen with raw chicken and raw beef! Perhaps because chicken and veal have a lower amount of protein? I dont know!

I think it's important to recognize the amount of protein consumed from plant material compared to animal material will make a difference in the urates as you indicated you noticed. This can cause major problems. Please read this article.

MTS and BTS are two completely different skinks with totally different nutritional requirements. You cannot compare results that you had a MTS and apply them to a BTS. I can tell you that I would never give a MTS dog or cat food as they are basically vegetarian. Furthermore, I would strongly discourage anyone from feeding sardines (oil or no oil) to a BTS or a PTS. I would also recommend that you boil your chicken and beef before you feed it your BTS. This will help to kill any harmful pathogens that may other wise be passed to your skink in the uncooked meat. Your skink looks great.

Sorry, my mistake! Mega is my BTS (the fat lady in the photo!lol!)not MTS! Leonardo, my MTS (PTS) only eats iguanas salads!
I made a mistake when i called Mega a MTS, she is a BTS and she is the one that loves sardine but i dont give sardines to her anymore!

James Wilson Feb 04, 2004 10:04 PM

Glad to hear that you do not feed him the sardines anymore
