panther chameleon lacks appitite

maverick Jan 28, 2004 07:04 PM

I have a new male panther which I've had for about a month. I'm not sure of its age but it's four inches long (snout to vent). It's very picky about eating and will only eat one to two medium crickets per day. Within the last week, it's barley eaten anything - only a few mealworms and shows no interest in crickets at all. He acts fairly healthy and drinks water. He's in a large screened cage with a basking spot in the 90's and UVB lighting. The humidity is decent with the use of a humidifier. Does anyone have any suggestions without trying any other hard to get foods? This is my first post in this forum. Thanks for any help.

Is he showing stress colors more often? If he is stressed by seeing other pets, his reflection somewhere, or feels too expose to view all the time he may be too distracted or disturbed to eat much. Check with the breeder to see if he had any other food preferences, or to see if your humidity/temp/light schedule is much different from what he had before you got him. Offer him some flying insects such as houseflies or moths. Try Zoophobas (darkling beetle larvae) rather than mealworms as they are more nutritious and more active.
