$450 to neuter my iguana?!?!

shortydsm Jan 28, 2004 07:38 PM

I was at the vet today taking my water dragon in for a follow-up visit (he frractured his arm) and I asked my vet's opinion on neuturing my ig, who has been in breeding season & very aggressive for 4 months now. She said it calms most of them down & that they've had a very high success rate & use the most updated equipment/supplies. Anyway, she gave me an estimate... $445 for everything... is that a lot of money or what? Anyone else spay/neuter their igs?

that seems kinda high. but i have never gottten a quote. i was also under the impression that neutering an igg does not always work. but maybe i heard wrong..

In my opinion. HELL NO!

From what I have read and heard from many many vets over the years is that this will have no real affect on the animal. Some get into breeding seasons from hell. Some have a few long ones and then nothing. Some will be affected some wont. There is no real guarantee. Another thing is many reptiles have real bad issues with the anesthetic. You could actually lose him to that.

Spaying in a medical emergency is something wholly different. Neutering I would never ever try until reptile medicine is far more advanced.

Have you tried working with light cycles instead?

I only paid $120 for the procedure and my girl was gravid and
had got into trouble. My vet did a total spay and follow-up
for this price.

I did want to mention that she had to be spayed for medical
reasons.

I just wanted to make a quick point. spay is for females (like yours) and can be needed. Neuter is for males and I haven't heard of an iguana 'needing' to be neutered.

I have heard of some that were helpful and some that were not. So IMHO "it depends". Perhaps there is more to what causes excess horomones in some of them.
Anyhow, my vet charges just under $250 Canadian for everything, including taxes - but I keep hearing of huge sums for everything in the US, so it may not be out of line, I have no idea.
