Box Turtle & Blue Tongued Skink Housed Together?

cruisinbeck Jan 28, 2004 09:16 PM

Hey all,

I'm gonna post this a couple of places and I apologize if if's been asked or answered before (or just totally ignorant...).

I have a blue tongued skink and a three toed box turtle (as well as a ball python, who is not involved in this issue for obvious reasons). Any reason not to house the BTS and the box together? I've never even considered it before (I quarantine every new herp and none of them even reside in the same room), but I've had my box turtle for 14 years, and my BTS is now 2 years old. I'm tempted to think that the turtle would wound the BTS (Norman, by the way), eating toes, etc., as he is fairly aggressive with other turtles, but any thoughts on this?

If you think this is a terrible idea I need to say that I'm not trying to be a doofus, just that the thought crossed my mind and would appreciate any input.

Thanks!

Beck

Hi,
I wouldn't if I were you. For one, as far as I know skinks aren't the fastest of lizards out there. The box could easily make a meal out of him or at least injure him in an attempt to do so. I would also be worried about the possibilty of transmitting pathogens, etc. This whole situation sounds to me like a potential disaster.

I know nothing about skinks, virtually, but I agree that a box turtle would try to make a meal out of one.
Bad idea!

Blue-tongues like it warmer and drier than 3-toes. And a blue tongue can be fairly aggressive. And they would both be interested in the same food, leading to potentially serious problems.

Plus the problems with parasites, etc.

So don't do it.

You guys addressed all my issues, and my initial thoughts to this idea...

The BTS is a big critter, but both he and my box are fairly aggressive. I've also given thought to the climate issues, and I do take for granted the vitality of my box (he's lived in Illinois and Florida, two very different climates, and is just a picture of health). I also think that they would be in competetion for food, despite any effort on my part.

What's the saying...if it's not broke don't fix it?

I agree, and kinda knew it. Thank you!
