i kind of already asked this question... but...

hhawk20005 Jan 28, 2004 09:48 PM

i have had my first two normals for about four months now. I just was able to visually sex them today, and have found that they are both males. they both weigh about 35-39 grams, and are very healthy. they have both been living together since the day i bought them, and they have never fought once. My question is, will they be okay living together since they grew up together... they share hides (even though they have 3), and they also share food and water dishes (but i guess they have too ) Any help is appreciated.

Seperate them. They'll fight once they hit sexual maturity. No sense in risking your animals wellfare.

Mine are more active alone and most people will say they are healthier kept by themselves, even if there is no competition for food/resources they just don't do as well for some reason.

gex53 Jan 28, 2004 09:56 PM

Its not any less healthy to have geckos together. Why would you think that? They do just fine, and like i said, in my case they're doing much better.

paradisio Jan 28, 2004 09:59 PM

Well I removed one of mine and the other geckos that were with em are doing much better without the extra gecko, but thats just mine. They are still new and young though

gex53 Jan 28, 2004 09:54 PM

In my experience, I saw a huge behavour change when i got two more geckos with my original. She was never comfertable. Now she eats regularly and is more active. Thats just my experience, it probably differs by personality, like everything else.

when you added two more to your female... what were they... males, females, or one of each...

One was male and one was female. They were sold to my that way anyway, but i'm beginning to think that my male is actually a female. But he is still young, so i'll find out for sure in time.

hhawk20005 Jan 28, 2004 10:08 PM

ooh... my first two were "temp sexed" for female, but i'm starting to think the breeder didnt know what she was doing because they both turned out male... i could see if one turned out male, but both... thats just not cool... i know that people say a 10 galon is ok for one leo... but is that true?i have my 2 males in a 20 gallon, but because of what i heard tonight, i am going to seperate them. i have a 20 gallon, a 10 gallon, and a 50 gallon coming... the only thing i can think of is use the 20, and ut a devider in the 50... think thatted work?

Yeah, that would work. But be sure there is no way that one can get to the other side. Those males definately need to be seperate. It would be tragic if you looked one day and was had died due to a fight. Geckos are experts at getting accross dividers, so make it a good one. I have 3 geckos in my 20 gal. Most people will say 1 gecko per every 10 gallons, but a 20 gal. has the same floor space as a 30 gal. You can put virtually as many as you want in a 50 gal. assuming that there is only one male.

paradisio Jan 28, 2004 10:12 PM

10 is fine, with hides that are reasonably sized my little ones have tons of free space...

Dividing is a good idea if you can divide it well, I would just do the 20, since heat pads for the 50 are going to cost quite a bit more and you aren't supposed to remove and put them back on, and if you divide in the middle you would put the heat pad in the middle for proper gradient, so you would have to remove it later for a big enclosure, so why waste the cash?

hhawk20005 Jan 28, 2004 10:19 PM

the only problem is, i have 2 males, and one female... what i was thinking is i would put the male on one side of the 50, and a female on the other side (because they are both still too young to breed) then a male in the 20. I already have a heat pad on the 20, and i have another brand new one for one side of the 50. Then, i am going to use a human heat pad for the other side of the 50. it gets just as hot as the reptile pads, and holds a consistant heat also. i am also using rock/gravel (medium sized white rocks) as a substrate (boiled rocks of course) so the rochs hold heat very well.

that the rocks are not small enough for your gecko to swallow. If it's fish-gravel sized gravel, you need to find a new substrate, gravel isn't safe for leos, they can get impacted.
