western hognoses don't get large are usually pretty docile and easy to keep

Well... you could get an albino cornsnake. Those are cheap. And they stay around 4 feet. You could also get an albino Kenyan sand boa if you can spend around $100. So... just saying you could get albinos. If you wanted.
Otherwise, you're open to a wide range of kingsnakes, ground and sand boas, cornsnakes, and African housesnakes.

"The serpent crams itself with animal life that is often warm and vibrant, to prolong an existence in which we detect no joy and no emotion. It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."

Go for an african house snake. Cheap as all get out. I bought mine for $15 at a show. Won't get very long (3-4 feet max) and a 20L is fine for them. And these suckers are fantastic eaters.

I keep mine in a 20L with an aspen substrate and a heat pad on one end. She doesn't seem to like cavern type hide spots, so I just use a couple of slabs of cork bark. I guess she just feels more secure when the hide touches her back.

I think the majority of people wouldn't consider them very pretty...just sort of a flat brown, although the marking on their heads are kinda neat...I think any animal has its own beauty.

Yep- African House snakes will do fine in a 20 gallon. There are a few color phases too that are a little more interesting than the standard brown. The Lace variety is kind of neat and there are albinos occasionally available.

I wouldn't exclude garters for not being beautiful! My red-sided garters are the cutest little things, and their parents were simply gorgeous! Bright colours, and bright personalities, they make great display animals, because they don't tend to hide as much as most kingsnakes and milksnakes do.

I vote for garters!
