DIMMER SWITCH FOR ROPE LIGHTING??? is this safe???>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

cv768 Jan 28, 2004 10:51 PM

I bought a dimmer switch that plugs into the wall and then you would plug in an appliance to the dimmer switch to increase/decrease the voltage to the appliance...

The dimmer has 300W maximum and the rope lighting we are using is only 48W per strand...we'll be using 2 strands so a total of 96W.

The package says to only use the dimmer (it has a sliding switch) incandesant lighting but rope lights are basically christmas lights so would that count???

Would this dimmeer be safe to use or no???

Here is a link for the dimmeer we bought below...it is the Credenza Lamp Dimmer.

Thanks.

If those dimmers can handle 300 watts RMS (root mean square) then you're fine, but if that's 300 watts peak, you can't be sure whether 96 watts can be sustained or not. Mostly likely, you won't have a problem, but something like that is always good to check up on.
Another thing to consider is the sensitivity of the dimmer control. Some of those are VERY sensitive, and the slightest nudge might turn your snake/lizard/captive neighbor into an ice cube.
Hope this helps, if your unfimilar with RMS, I just google'ed a description and it can be found below.
