Dwarf american toad?

ginevive Jun 07, 2003 06:13 AM

I was working in the garden yesterday. I bought one of those toad houses from walmart I know, it's kind of tacky, with something that is obviously a frog molded to the roof, but oh well.) I lifted it up, and there is a small american toad in there, about 2 inches long. I guess those things really work. (It's better than last year, when a toad somehow got through the gap in our front door and was sitting in the middle of the dining room.)
I was wondering, I read about a species of toad called b. chrismithi, supposed to be a dwarf american toad? i can't believe I have studied toads this long and not come across this. Any info on it? Did some guy named Chris Smith discover an american toad that didn't grow beyond 2 inches?

This "dwarf" subspecies is not new, check out the field guides.

Whether or not you have a dwarf depends on your location. American dwarf toads are limited to Southern IL & IN south to the upper portion of TX.
