Grey feces, bad?

paradisio Jan 29, 2004 11:31 AM

Don't remember if this is bad or not or what it is caused by...

Is it just from shedding?

Also is it a good sign that they are starting to sleep outside the hides now?

i don't know about the feces, though it's my guess that you may be right. but i think it's a great sign that they're starting to sleep outside their hides- it means they're comfortable.

Yea, my leo's feces get a little lighter, more white/gray after she eats her shedding, normally it's tannish. And she sleeps outside her hide everynight, I agree, I think it means they're comfortable.

If the poop is solid but there is a pool of clear fluid around it, it could just mean your geckos is well hydrated, drinking a lot from water bowl. If the poop itself is runny, your gecko probably has an infection/parasites, you should bring a fresh fecal sample to the vet to identify the offending organism

well, the poop was fresh, but it did look different from any other i have looked at.

the white portion was there, but the rest was watery.

i guess most of the poop i have examined to date is somewhat dried. it is dark with the white portion.

i am going to inquire on a vet tomorrow!
i hope i am just being paranoid!

Mine sometimes throw a watery one every now and then. One in particular likes to overeat, and this gives her the runs for a day. I know she's fine because she's nearly tripled in size since I got her (in a month), she sheds beautifully, is well hydrated, active, and curious as all hell. I used to panic everytime I saw loose feces from either one of them, but I've learned that it isn't always something you need to immediatly panic over.

If they're showing no other symptoms, I personally suggest you just watch them carefully. Vet visits are stressful for the geckos, and unless you have a truly qualified and knowledgeable herp vet they can harm as much as help, sometimes. If they show other symptoms of illness, i.e. not eating, hanging around the cool side of the tank, not growing, becoming increasingly lethargic, or vomiting, get their fat tails to a vet. Also, if you notice this watery poop more than one or maybe even two days in a row, take them in. I wouldn't run them to the vet over one, though-- I personally have learned that that alone isn't worth the stress and potential mishandling of the geckos.
