Breeding questions?

jack7777766 Jan 29, 2004 02:21 PM

Hi,

I was wondering if I personally dont observe copulation, how long should I put the female in the males cage for, to be sure that they did the deed??
Also the male is in a rubbermaid with 11"x16" of floor space I feel its an ok size for him but Im not sure if its big enough to put the female in for as long as it takes for copulation?
I also have an empty 10 gallon tank I could use and in a week I might have an available 15long tank I could put them in.
However I know they like their rubbermaids more than glass tanks because of the privacy, when I put my female in the glass tank she stopped eating as much.
And also Id have to give the male enough time to get used to the glass tanks and make it his.
So which way would be best???

Thanks
Jack

The 11'x16' rubber tank sounds good enough to me. You don't want you female to stop eating, thats for sure. Normaly breeding takes place within the first 2 weeks but most breeders just wait to take the male out untill they see eggs. This way, she will have enough sperm to last all season.

A normal 10 gallon tank is about 10'x20' so there about the same size as the rubber cage you have, sounds good to me.

Good Luck, Austin

Thanks

The thing is thats the males enclosure, so Id have to take the female out.
I wanted to let them copulate and then put the female in her own enclosure.
Is maybe a week enough to leave her in the males enclosure, or should I do two weeks?? and then put her in her enclosure again??
Id rather her lay eggs in her own enclosure

Thanks
Jack

If you want her to lay the eggs in here own tank, thats not a problem at all. After they do the "deed" it takes a female about 2-4 weeks to develope eggs then she lays them.
So I would have them together for 2 weeks to be sure, then she would have the eggs right after or within those 2 weeks after.

Sounds great, Austin
