Too big for a box turtle? What kind?

jacbo Jun 07, 2003 08:45 AM

I have a turtle that appeared in my back yard today that looks like a common box turtle, but seems to be too big. I'd post a picture I took next to a measuring tape, but I do not know how to post a picture.
Anyway, the turtle looks, for all intents and purposes, like a female common box turtle except that she is at least 10" long. Is this possible for a box turtle?
I've seen numerous snapping turtles on our property over the years that have been quite large. However, this turtle is not a snapping turtle. Any ideas? If someone would like me to email them a picture, just let me know. My email address is brentdn@insightbb.com.

Thanks,

Brent

what color is it? If the shell is a tan brown color then there is a good chance it could be a Gulf Coast. though their shells can be all kinds of colors. Just email the Pic to someone and ask them to post it for you.

It still could be a box turtle. Sometimes they can get large like humanes. I have a three-toed boxie that is up around 9" in size even though the rest of mine are around 5" in size.

It's a female RES

If you have a 3-toed that is that large, its more likely that it is a Gulf Coast (coloring can be similar).

I would be floored stunned crazy shocked to see a three-toed that large. Gulf coasts, though, would be that large and not be too abnormal. Gulf's can also be any coloration a three-toed can be, and often even have three toes on their rear feet. Do you have a photo? I'd bet good money this big 9" guy is a gulf coast.

there is a guy with a large collection who lives in south florida who posted a pic of a HUGE florida box turtle in the kingsnake photogallery. Look for it. its amazing. Floridas are usaly among the smallest of the eastern subspecies and this one looks like a small gopher tortoise.

the Eastern subspecies is super regional in size. In my area in NC, we only have fairly small ones that are comparable to my three-toeds. Up north I've caught larger and I've been sent a big gal from farther north that is about double the size of my majority. I have yet to see an adult florida that was as small as my three-toeds or local easterns, though, but each florida I've seen was smaller than the big easterns.
