Am I just being paranoid?

speedracerbecki Jan 29, 2004 03:23 PM

I am just convinced that my veiled cham is gravid but it's quite possible that I'm just being paranoid. I posted a pic of her a while back and someone assured me that she was not, judging by her colors. Would her colors change if she was gravid, but not mated? She's always been alone, so I know she hasn't mated, but she's getting fat and from some angles looks a little lumpy. The other day I was repotting some of her plants and I noticed that she had knocked some of the rocks out of one and dug a little bit. Not much at all, but that made me start wondering all over again. She's eating, shedding and pooping just fine and her colors are normal, am I worrying for nothing? Thank you! Becki

A cham who is gravid with infertile eggs (not mated) will still show some gravid coloration. If she's showing interest in digging let her. She may show you her preferred type of laying spot so you can accomodate her when the time comes. It is safer to assume she's gravid so she can get rid of her eggs rather than taking a risk of egg binding.

I agree with Carlton. In addition, she may be getting ready to lay now. I'd make sure she has a place to dig/lay ASAP. Otherwise you risk dystocia and death.
