Wiring lights, parallel versus a series.

rjmarchisi Jan 29, 2004 03:31 PM

Well the topic says it all. I have to wire 2 compact fluorescent ( screw in with internal ballast in the bulbs ) sockets together and I was wondering what is the better option.

Thanks,

rjm

First of all, you are scaring me. Do you have a friend with any experience?

Second, Always in parallel.

You dont need all that much experience =)

Ive added an extra reptisun 2.0, and two compacts and fans all one one fish hood. Hey, im in the 10th grade =)

My compacts are in series, but different swtiches from flourescent, and my moonlights using LED's as well.

Oh crap, i misread. My compacts arnt in series, as in sharing voltages. I meant something else.

Anyway, go with parallel.

Well I have wired plenty of things in the past, at 28 after working in a machine shop for 3 years among other things. Wiring RC cars, all of the lights and switches in my apartment, I don't think I need to worry all that much. After some research on the web there wasnt much detail about the benifits of parallel versus series, except that if one light went out the other wouldn't. I'm pretty much a do-it-yourselfer and if I can't figure it out I will ask around. All of the fans in my hoods were wired parallel so I should have just realized that it had been working well that way and went with it.
After salvaging an old extension cord for the plug I wired the bulbs last night and tested it out and it worked fine. Once I have more work done on this hood I will post images of it. I figured I would need a little extra light since the tank I plan to place it on is a 20 gallon extra high.

It isn't so much advantages vs disadvantages as it is works vs doesn't work. Almost everything you can think of is wired in parallel including your car and your house. Many X-mas lights are an exception because they only run on 1 or 2 volts so they are wired in series so that the outlet voltage is divided amongst the many bulbs, this is also why you can't wire your lights in series.
