its a miracle my geckos are even alive

savigeckolvr Jan 29, 2004 04:58 PM

There was an ice storm here in SC and I just got my power back last night it was out since Monday at 1:30pm. Temps have been below freezing here. All my 20 of my fish are dead including Cheech, my 5 yr old 13inch tiger oscar. Tuesday night it was so cold I took Geico out of his tank and he was so cold he was having muscle spasms and moved as if he was drunk. It was like holding a living ice cube. I was on the verge of tears I picked him up and me and my fiancee took turns holding him at like 3 in the morning. Then we took him and put him in a critter carrier and put him in the bed between us while we slept to keep him warm. We looked in on Tiny with the flash light but it looked too late. She was still with her eyes half open they didnt look like they had any life in them and she didn't appear to be breathing. The next morning we had a ziploc bag ready to dump her in to bury her but as we were about to shake her into it she moved! She was deadly cold but still alive. So I took her and put her in a deli cup and put her on my stomach to warm her back up. As of right now they are both alive and staying at a friends house (bless his heart) with a heat lamp water and a divider. They haven't eaten since Saturday, but I got them some food today and am going to pick them up tomorrow after class. It is a miracle that they have even survived this week from hell My dog is fortunately at my parents and is okay.

Yes, it came back on some time last night thank God. It's still hard to believe Tiny is alive, I had said a little prayer for them so it must have been a miracle that she survived. She was smart enough to use what little strength she had left to crawl into her humid hide to stay off the tiles which were probably colder. They say the ice storm is supposed to come back Monday, but I pray that they are wrong

Hello

It is wonderful to me that you made the geckos a priority so many people in situations like theese think they themselves are the topics of worrying! Where as you made your gecko important. Where I live we had a massive hurricane this year Kitty Hawk Nc the outer banks and the power was out for 3 weeks in some areas and thousands lost there homes though we were ok before the hurricane my genius best friend made me a contraption. He ran a car battery to a cigarette plug in. From there he got and a dapter from cigarette plug in to power outlet you can get these at radioshack. So this away we had a lot of power and we were able to alternate geckos imbetween heatpads for the 11days I was without power. This worked great though it was not cold like it was were you were it was only still not hot enough for the herps. Its great so see people like you who care for there pets.

I'm glad your geckos are ok, sorry your fish weren't so fortunete.

I would suggest going out and getting those *hot pads* that you'd put in your gloves or boots. Their not the proper heat pack but it'll do until you can find some. My feeder supplier has hot packs and i'm going to get some with my next order. We are lucky in that we have a large wood stove so if we lose power for any length of time i can move my geckos upstairs. One of the things that i was thinking about was a power failure..... we used to have an old power supply unit and now they have those Eliminator battery things that you can plug household things in.

Keep on handy a few of the 40-60 hour heat packs available on hand. Also in a pinch you could use the handwarmer packs available at Walmart the next time the power goes out. Glad to hear your babies are doing well!
