mouse and rat breeding

devilgofer Jan 29, 2004 05:05 PM

i am thinking about breeding mice and rats. rats for my boa when he gets bigger and mice for my gophersnake. i would sell extras to a local pet shop and regular old people like yourselves. i would like some ino about breeding them and also some tips on how to make the breeding rack and tell me what yours is like and maybe a few pics if possible. also what do your diets consist of and what percent of other foods makes up the entire diet. i live in arizona and i would like to keep them outside for the smell. the temps here go to about 115 to 120 in the hottest art of the summer down to about 40 or 45 at noght on the cold winter nights. will this climate be ok? please i would like some pointers and a few tips. thanx , matt

I think that most of the things you are looking for are on this forum, just go down the list and look for them. The temps are not good, in the summer then highs are way too high and in the winter the nights are too cold if you want them to produce.

I would also make sure that your local petshop will buy the extra mice and rats. if your gopher snake is eating adult mice then you could just feed it really young rats and not have to have both mice and rats.

Before you get in too deep make sure you have a market for the extras. Also, those temps will cook rodents at the high by a good 40degrees and lows are about 10 degrees below the lowest tolerable. 80 is a good high max to look at and I don't let mine get down below room temp but others have had colonies at into the 50s. Heat will kill them fast. Outside also opens them to infestation by wild rodents that could easily ruin your colony. Some sort of insulated, cooled and heated area sounds likely. Find a usable area with some climate control and then go from there.
Also the suggestion that rats may work totally for you is good. I only have mice 'cause I have tiny babys with Children's pythons, corns and Candoia. A gopher with any growth can go with rats and the size is much faster than waiting for a mouse to grow.

yes now i am going to breed just rats if i do it at all. but i cant find a place to put them. if i had an air conditioned shed in my back yard that would be great but my mom thinks rats are disgusting stinky little monsters and wont let me keep them inside. maybe my closet? i have a walk in but my snakes are right outside my closet. how stinky are the rats? are they as noticeable as when a boa poops? (makes you want to throw up!) my mom thinks they would stink the house up or make it smell like a pet shop. i really dont wanna have to buy multiple rats at over 3.60 cents a peice here every week. please help.

Rats do not stink any where near as much as mice. Rats, kept properly, don't smell. I have a cage of 'pets' right next to the tv. You don't smell them unless I forget to change them. And NOT anywhere near as much as boa poop!
