dirt moisture question.....any help is great

trevorbennett Jan 29, 2004 05:34 PM

ok, i have a cb mali uro. hes almost 18 months old and i want to switch him over to the dirt substrate.....to hopefully make him feel better. my question is, how much moisture does the mix need?

how moist should it be?

and should i put a thin layer of sand over the top of it?

is it ok if the top is completely dry but its moist below?

does the added moisture cause any respritory problems?

how often can i expect to see my uro? is he ever gonna come back up, or when i do this is he just gonna be under there?

i have some more questions but this should be good for now.

thanx to everyone whos postes help on this website, its a great help to those of us who are learnin about new stuff (dirt). just thanx.

i'll attach a pic of him.

No, they are not stupid questions but getting an answer to these are not that easy to come by. This dirt substrate started only recently and everyone is still experimenting with it. Even Robyn (the guy who started this whole thing ) is unable to answer these questions. This dirt thing is still in the experimental stage and everyone here is leery about giving answers about something they aren't really sure about themselves. Try it out and hope for the best. By the way, you might want to check out Robyn's post about the "dirt laboratory" before you begin.

Hope this helps at least a little

they are not dumb questions, they just don't have quick, easy, two sentence answers. and you asked a whole bunch of them

check out our FAQ at our site on the Uros, it links all the discussion we have had to this point, and it addresses each of those questions, but you are talking thousands and thousands of words, and i just can't sit and type it out each time someone asks the same questions again (which is about twice a week )

i put up that FAQ hoping it would make it easier for folks to track the discussion, but it is a lot of reading

for quick answers, but with no context, meaning you just can't apply them without further info...

1.moist enough to make a good burrow
2.no
3.somewhat
4.it shouldn't, depends on your husbandry
5.depends on the rest of your setup

best of luck with your animal!
