Edward Jan 29, 2004 06:06 PM

I was told it is an Asian species, but I can't find anything on it.
Thanks.

pyxidea?

Wow Looks like a Heosemys spinosa with a messed up shell...any one else?

Jobst Jan 30, 2004 12:53 PM

No...not Heosemys spinosa: they don't have 3 keels like this one has (or had, before its shell got messed up). H. spinosa has a vertebral keel with a sometimes diferently colored (don't know how you'd call that) 'protruding layer on top'. The head is not typical for H.spinosa either.
I'd say it's Pyxidea mouhoti.

Job.

I've looked both of them up and, although I'm not positive, it seems to resemble Pyxidea mouhotii more than Heosemys spinosa.
Thanks for your help, and if anyone else has an opinion, please let me know.
Any ideas as to its monetary value? (Although I am not interested in selling it. Just curious.)

looks like a Giant Asian Pond Turtle(Heosemys grandis)It is very similar to the picture of grandis in "Turtles and Tortoises" by Ferri-page 131.Does it have stripes on the neck?

Edward Jan 30, 2004 12:03 PM

I don't have that book, but I did look it up. It really looks a lot more like Pyxidea mouhotti.
Here's a link to some pictures on chelonia.org that look VERY much like mine. I figured it's a pretty reliable source.
Anyone else have an opinion?

I'd say that is definately a Cuora (Pyxidea) mouhotii. It's slightly deformed, probably from being raised on catfood, monkey biscuits or something similar.

Generally, they sell for $35-150 USD in the pet trade. However, being cosmetically challenged you'd probably have to settle for something a lot less or just giving it away.

Not a grandis.
Not a bad guess though.
There are two or three people who come here who will know for sure i think.
