How to stop the BREEDING besides seperation ??

nancyjo Jan 29, 2004 07:40 PM

I have a predicament..I am a teacher and someone donated two dragons to my classroom. Great!!.. I have been wanting one and I was happy and still am. Question? I believe I have a male and a female. They are approx. 5 months old. They have been cage mates since October and get along very well. I do not want to breed and would hate to seperate. I honestly have no room for two seperate cages. What should I do? Is there anyway to discourage breeding besides throwing in condoms? (Ha Ha Ha) . Seriously, I have heard you have to set up a rainy season to encourage breeding. But I also heard it doesn't matter. I don't want to stress them out. Don't know what to do! I will probably have to part with one, but am very hesitant. Would like to prevent this if possible. Please help. Is there anyway to prevent breeding besides seperation??

Nope, they will breed, and the male may reach sexual maturity soon.....some do as early as 5 months, but your female is in no way ready yet. You'll have to seperate them.....

Hello ,
Why not see if any of the students would be able to give one a permanent home? You could even hold a contest or something if more than one student is able to take one. You just gotta make sure that whoever wants it knows exactly what they are getting into, and all the care involved. Just a suggestion! Good luck!

No way to prevent it or discourage it at all. When the male is ready, and they are ready young 6-7 months he will become more aggressive in his advances. This is not healthy for the female at that age, and the stress of the male alone can be a bit much putting her overall health, and well-being in jeopardy. Breeding females to young is not good for them at all, and should be done when she is fully mature, and of healthy size/weight. No other way but to seperate or sell/donate to another class if possible. Sorry

Even if female, they still can produce eggs, they do not need to mate to produce them, it does not happend to all females, but some do produce them that have never been with a male.

They are old enough to sex know, here is a picture of a male, note the are just above the vent (towards the tip of the tail, a male has a dip in the center and two bulges on each side, also below that going down the legs are enlarged pore.

Now a Female, she will have one slight bump in the center, where the male has the dip, she also will have smaller femoral pore going down the thighs.

If you have two females, they can stay together usually if raised together and one is not intimidating the other. Two males usually have to be separated, they will start fighting and one or both can get hurt.

A male and female will need separated to avoid her becoming gravid before she really is grown up herself.

I was thinking you might be able to petition the cage in half (long way) but it would have to be pretty big.... I know how you feel - I had the same issue. We know have 2 indoor cages and 1 outside (petitioned).

If you see the male bobbing his head or biting her neck seperate them immediately. Those are mating behaviors.
