Baby skinks...pic question

kremlinator Jan 29, 2004 07:53 PM

Hey all, some pictures of the one day old babies!! Well one of them at least...

here's the question: The babies won't touch any crickets I put in! I am using 2 week old crickets, so they are small and very annoying. The babies won't eat, and I just converted the males cage to be astroturf like his old cage-so that he'll eat. I am confident he will soon. But anyways, How the hell do I get the babies to eat? I've tried live and dead baby crickets. it's been 2 days now, and yeah...I don't want them to die!!!!

The babies have refused the following: 2 week old crickets, dead 2 week old crickets, boiled egg whites, Apple baby food. They are 3 days old now, and refuse to eat!!! Weirdly, one will let me touch it and hold it (when I am trying to lead them to food) and the other one hates me!!! but yeah, what else can I try as far as food goes??

Hahaha! - When on the odd occasion I give my blueys crickets and they don't go for then - I get like that too. I just want them to die. So I start pulling legs off. That works well with putting them in the fridge to slow them down. Hope that was some help.

They are called Gold Skinks...so yeah, they are gold colored. The babies sides are black, and their gold is far darker than the females...It is much shinier though, especially in some light. It's a digital camcorder that I take pictures with, so it's not so much the camera as it is the heatlamp...but yeah they are for sure a beautiful gold. They look wet all the time, which is funny cause one tried climbing up my sleeve today when I was trying to feed them and they felt very very soft. No claws yet, yay!!!

Yeah they are really cute!!! The male is very mad at me when I was checkinh up on him in his new pen, and he won't eat...the temperature is good now though. The babies aren't even interested in food...Like I had a freshly killed cricket actually right in front of both babies, they smelled it and didn't care. The mom then went for it when I lifted the seperator (she'll eat anything!) anyways, the babies are hilariously cute, I'll keep posting pics as I get them in!!!

So where do you find one of those to buy? How much are they going for?

Ummm...I found them at petstores in Calgary. Basically they are easy to breed, so there should be lots around!!! My female cost me $40, and my male was $30. They are VERy hardy...my room gets as cold as 15 degrees C and they just keep on goin'. Anyways, yeah, just call around. They are cheap, require only a 10 gallon for two of them and they CAN be hand tamed (somewhat) if you get them from an early age. The males have the stunning orange stripe and are easier to hand tame. hope that helped.

oh yeah, just so you know...there's pictures of the male and female that are far better than what you see in these down lower on the forum. They are really beautiful skinks, people always tell me they are the nicest looking lizards they've ever seen!!

yeah they stay small...about 9 inches. My male is huge (12 inches or so) and the female is 9. They both lived in a ten gallon, and obviously they loved it cause the bred and NEVER fought, except the night I added the male...he was bit once and then they loved each other.

They have so much personality!!! My female is scared of hands but loves to explore, and my male can be held for short times but is ALWAYS hiding. The babies even have personality...One is exploring and doesn't care about being touched, and the other hides and hates being touched. Weird eh??? They live for 10 years, by the way. They are RIDICULOUSLY easy to take care of...and I do mean easy. They are tough as hell to humidity and temp variance. There's not much info about them out there, as nobody knows what they are!!! I learned all this from experience.
