Annual Honduran Winter PhotoShoot

jonellopez Jan 29, 2004 10:28 PM

Oooops! Sorry guys, I didn't mean to make it sound like I'm in the Honduras coastline taking pics for the SI's swimsuit edition. I know a lot of us would love to be there though, he he

Kidding aside. I was taking pics of some of my keepers, new acquisitions, and up and comers today. Cold and gloomy winter weather usually leads to some nice pictures for me. Plus the moss growth in the backyard adds for a somewhat naturalistic background. I just wanted to show you guys some of my Hondurans and examples of the variability of the Hypomelanistics.

First is this female. I totally love the way she looks! She has very bright orange, ruby-eyes, and greenish-gray/mocha looking or “watchamacalit” colored bands. Even her very minimal tipping is very light. She was produced from a Hypo to Het Hypo breeding that originally came (I was told) from Bob Applegate. Her father and none of her Hypo siblings are very average looking Hypos. She is a little too small to be breed this year so I opted to let her breed next year and I can’t wait!

Second is this male. I’m planning to breed him with the female above and see what will pop-up. As you can see, he actually has a different degree of Hypomelanism. Instead of his colors being lighter/reduced this one has more reduction of the amount of black. Even his facial mask is reduced (I call him goggle-face ). I saw a similar looking animal posted here a couple of months ago. I got him from Gary G. @ Colubrid Crazy here in Northern California.

Has anyone found out if there's actually different combination of genes responsible to the Hypomelanism mutation in Hondurans? What do you guys think could cause this degree of variability? I have a pair of Hypo het ghost that also looks different from each other. One has dark brown bands and the other has purplish-looking bands. Just makes me wonder what is actually happening. Well see what happens when these two are bred together.

here's my pinstriped hypo male's full body shot.

I know some of you guys have seen this animal before but here's a sibling of the pinstriped hypo male above. She's brumating right now and i hope to produce some copies of the younger hypo sibling above since they are from the same line. My fingers are crossed.

Thanks. I have thought about setting a web site up but have not done it yet. I guess I'm too busy cleaning up snake crap. LOL
I wonder if this was the one you saw posted a while back that reminded you of your male aboves markings. This is a male of mine going on 3 this year.
By the way your adult pair of stillwater hypos are definatly some of the best I have seen. I had a nice pair of babies picked out this past year but the female turned out to be a male when double checked at purchase time so I passed them up but hope to pick up a pair soon.

Hi Randy

Scoopin' up poop? Yup, I do it every other day too! hehe. I'm having a short break because of brumation which is really nice.

Nice pinstriped hypo BTW. It may or may have not been you that had that animal. The animal i remember had the cool goggle-face mask that my male have. I asked the guy where he got it and he mentioned that it came from Steve Osbourne and I remember my friend telling me that he sold/traded some animals to Steve that year so I'm almost positive they were somewhat related.

About the Stillwater hypos(sshhhhhhh we're still in the milksnake forum, hehe). My adult pair is beautiful but I've seen some real nice hypos around too. I just think these are some of the nicest colored bulls available. I also kept a nice looking female in 02 that is more beautiful than mom or dad(depending on individual tastes ofcourse). Here's a pic of her taken a couple of weeks ago. She has more reduction of black than either of her parents. As you can see she still has some of her juvenile markings and has not really lightened up. I can't wait to see her full grown.

Some of the nicest hondos that I've seen in awhile. I am also quite impressed with your skills on the camera. Please post anything else that you might have. Thanks-Brett
