retained eye cap?

x-J-x Jan 30, 2004 08:07 AM

Hi all!

I have a 6 month old ball python who has recently shed.
It looks to me like he retained an eye cap, or at least half
and eye cap, over one of his eyes. -looks like a little wrinkle
over half his eye.

what should i do?? is this something to worry about.. his shed
was good, all 1 peice..

Ok, after reading some of the older posts, i've think the problem may be the humidity in my room. it is VERY dry in my house and really cold outside..

Tonight i'll leave the humidifier on near the cage ...
do that for a while and if that doesnt solve it I also
read a post about using a peice of tape, but i'm kind of nervous
about doing that...

but eye drops on his eye. that will soften it up. than after 2 or three days of eye drope. take scootch tape and wrap it around your fingers stickey side out. Then put it on the eye and GENTALY role it towardds the back of the eye.

is it definately a retained eye cap ? or does the eye look sort of indented? I wasnt sure from your discription if thats what you meant.. if it is indented you probably just need to raise the humidity in the tank.

Don't use tape...especially if you're nervous. You can actually pull the retina off of the eye if the cap doesn't want to come off or isn't actually there. My guy's been sick and has a retained cap and after much searching, and no help at all here, I found that you need to give him a drop of artificial tears...not just regular eyedrops. Use DryEyes, Hypo Tears, Natural Tears or Liquifilm Tears. You can also use a saline solution, if you feel like going to the Vet. I still have some left over from hydration thearapy and the Vet told me to gently apply some with a cotton swab. Good luck.
