What to get? Hognose or Cal King? more....

chriscook Jan 30, 2004 09:03 AM

I have been a lizard man until now and I want to venture into snakes. I want a good beginner snake and like the hognoses alot but also like some of the color morphs of the kingsnakes. I am looking at some high white cal kings and normal hogs. Any input as to which is better for a first timer would be appreciated. I would like to get into breeding down the road so this is a consideration as well. Which would be easier to breed. Thanks for any info you can give me.

do you like designer stuff or would you like an a**kicker? if you want an a.k.'er, i would suggest a brooks king or eastern king. brooks come in many different morphs as well, and ( at least if you polled this forum) easterns can't be beat. not even by an indigo LOL. i have no experience with hognose, but kings in general are easy to breed. there are plenty of good breeders on this forum, so keep askin' questions.

I have to agree with Dave. Brooks are the easiest. I have have/and am keeping Both Hogs (several kinds) and Brooks. Hogs can be a bit "iffy" to get started though when established (westerns) are easy.

My first choice would be some type of Pit., either a Bull or Sonoran Gopher. But of the ones you are considering I'd go with a Brooks. My pair of Hypos are awesome, always ready to eat, inquisitive and none of that smelly musking. Easterns are one of the few Kings I have not kept so I can't speak of them. Another good choice is a splendida. I find at least 4-6 of these a year and have never been bitten or musked (I don't keep any wild stock. I cruise the roads just to see what's out and stop to get the critters off the road). The few cb individuals I have kept have been the same. That's my $0.02. Good luck.

...maybe. CalKings can be really easy too - at least the one's I've owned. Now I'm talking getula not some other Lampros.
