Serious question....

smokeysshadow Jan 30, 2004 09:35 AM

How come so many people name one of their snakes "Gandalf"? Every time I see that I can't help but picture some jack@ss in his room using his ball python to regain middle earth from the all-encompassingly evil cal-king who......Oh, sorry, I guess I didn't get enough sleep last night. See you in the shire-Brett

I've named my 2 snakes after Lord of the Rings characters. A lot of people seem to name their snakes after characters or use a movie theme, etc. I've seen so many people name their BP "Monty" or other names after people with the last name Python. Just a personal preference - don't see how one can put down another for a name they pick for their pets.

I almost named one of my pets after one of the characters in LOTR but decided against it and went with Mr. Bean instead..I think it is very hard to find good names for pets. Most people get ideas from books or movies..here are my pets names...

2 rats ..Splinter and April
1 jcp mix..Mr Bean
1 ferret..FooFoo
1 Rosehair T..Jigglypuff
1 Border Collie..Kipster
1 prairie skink..Rayquaza
1 spoiled cat..Thomas BadCat
1 ball python..unnamed because I dont know the sex..Maybe I should name it Gandalf....hee
Perhaps someone can help me name it......

rearfang Jan 30, 2004 02:40 PM

I once had a Tokay gecko that I named BALFAZAR (means Lord of the Flies). More recently I have a Wagners Viper that is extremely nasty. I call her U'BER B---H.

Now those are some intellectually stimulating names rearfang. Fits the temperaments and behaviors of those animals well. Maybe this will make out to be an interesting thread. So let's hear them- What is your snake’s name? My favorite so far is "Jigglypuff" the tarantula

jwalters Jan 30, 2004 05:25 PM

As my signature below states, I have a corn snake named Mr. Hat after Mr. Hat on southpark. The funny thing is, it's actually Mrs. Hat! And I also have a ball python named Kitty.

I am watching another snake, that also took a name from Southpark, its Leopold Stotch aka "Butters". I guess, you have to be a southpark fan to get that one!

That is nuts. How do you take care of all that? I assume you’re not a college student. I can barely take care of the ten or so snakes AND uno leopard gecko that I possess. What, do you hire a staff? Seriously though, you have some unique labels for your captives. -Brett

meretseger Jan 30, 2004 09:10 PM

Oh, but I AM a college student. However, I'm married, work full time, and my parents pay my tutition. So I sort of have it made except for the negative hours of free time I have left for myself.
Feeding the snakes only takes 3 or 4 hours a week with 2 people, which really isn't too bad. The lizards take 5 or 10 minutes a night if I hurry. The turtles, half an hour every week for tank cleaning. Food costs me about 50$-80$ a month, which really isn't bad for a hobby. I'm also an expert in cheap effective caging. I can house an adult sand boa for 5$. I also might stand to make a nice chunk of money this breeding season, if things go right, which they usually don't. I've also been pretty lucky with not having to go to the vet, which is nice, because my vets have no idea what they're doing.

can take a joke. My hat is off to you-Brett

Rayquaza Jan 31, 2004 08:11 AM

Thier have been some great names here so far but I dont know how Meretseger remembers all his.not to mention trying to pronounce them.. I cant even remember my kids names half the time and I only have four..

smokeysshadow Jan 31, 2004 03:45 PM

LOL, Do you ever do the thing where you are trying to get the attention of one of your kids and end up naming them all, but the kid you were trying to get ahold of is the last name out of your mouth? Ex.- Ta,Ro,Bre, Amy! Oh well, never mind.

Concerning my lack of a post involving my snake’s names, I personally choose not to anthropomorphize my serpents and other caged animals that I keep for my own selfish pleasures. To me, adopting a name to these animals makes it easier for one to forget the nature of these animals’ lives. But to each his own, and I was making a joke. Though, after reading many of these posts I have realized that I do have names for my snakes and it’s actually quite sad. I just label my pairs with an abbreviation like for example- SK1 and SK2 for the scarlet kings. I also have PK1, PK2, YB1, YB2,YE1,YE2...etc.etc.

I just wanted to say that I have at least two personal friends who have named their snakes after characters from LOTR. The joke was aimed at them, since we tease each other about it often. I apologize if I offended anyone. It sincerely was not my intention. I will keep you guys and gals posted when more fitting names are applied. I do how ever have names for my cats, and that is where my screen name comes in. One of my cats name is Smokey, and we are always following each other around. Hope all is well-Brett

Rayquaza Jan 31, 2004 05:29 PM

but I kinda felt bad for those who did name thier pets after LOTR because they might feel like dweebs after your comment.Sometimes its really hard to figure out when people are joking or serious on posts.
Do you really think we anthropomorphize our pets by giving them names? BTW I had to look that word up in the dictionary, I am not a learned person..Anyway I dont think that by giving my snake a name I expect him to start acting human in any way..It is just better than calling him snake...and no, I can never get my kids names straight ever no matter how hard I try and it really pisses them off, lol.

smokeysshadow Jan 31, 2004 08:01 PM

I might have gone a little overboard with that one, but I do feel that sometimes people will think of their snakes having human like characteristics, which obviously they do not. I am certainly not accusing anyone here of this. Hopefully my point is understood. I personally don't want to lose track of why I keep my pets, but as others, as well as yourself, have pointed out, there are common sense reasons for labeling a snake with a name similar to a humans. Using a name for a practical reason such as to better serve the memory, I can most definitely understand, but when someone has a pet snake and think that the snake actually enjoys being a prisoner, I can not. In my experience this has been most common with persons who have named their snakes. Again I am not directing this statement to you or anyone here. I am sure that many readers have met or know someone who totes their snake around town as if the snake likes to go on walks.lol Here is a pic of "Y/E2" He is an everglades x yellow rat cross, maybe we can have a long thread about "hybrids" next.LOL Later on-Brett

Rayquaza Jan 31, 2004 08:34 PM

of having pets in cages..I used to have rabbits and I always let them out to run in the yard because I hated keeping them caged then they dug holes in the fence and got away..we try to justify it by saying that they would have a worse life in the wild, battling parasites and starvation etc, etc..So why do we keep pets? Selfishness, boredom, the need to play God to some its just greed for the money to be made or the challenge of seeing what they can breed...Man this is getting way to deep for me I might start sympathizing with PETA if I dont quit now...I guess its the same reason we have kids or get married or do anything..Because we can.....LOL who has the answers

smokeysshadow Jan 31, 2004 08:47 PM

np

meretseger Jan 31, 2004 06:06 PM

If I had a naming system like that... I can see it...

"plr3 didn't eat"
"which one is that"
"the yellow one"
"the big yellow one?"
"no, the little yellow one. sheesh, honestly"
"oh, you mean the one we got from the one guy?"
"no, the other guy"
"oh, ok"

We've tried numbers, but names are easier on my brain when dealing with a bunch of virtually identical animals. It's also fun to make the vet's receptionists spell them.

would cause some sort of confusion at some level, considering the sheer number of animals that you own. Like I said before, I don't know how you handle it. As for my system, I just place a piece of masking tape on the particular animal’s cage as a label. Works pretty well, though I only have a mere fraction of what you own. Thought I would share a pic this is "PK2". peace

meretseger Jan 31, 2004 08:40 PM

We know all their names by heart... for some reason I can remember that Nebhet is the female anery het paradox KSB and Herqet is the female anery het albino. I just can't remember anything with numbers in it. We have to label the cages so we know who's where though.

Breeding KSB's is my big project, but I may only have 2 or 3 litters this year. But if you let me know if you're looking for babies or adults of which morph I can probably help you out. Anyway... oh, which picture to show? Well, why not this one- these two girls are in a breeding group right now. One is looking quite lumpy. Which is good.

I have a ball python named nariko. Nariko litterally means "soft, gentle, likes to climb to high places." When I first got him I was surprized how soft he was, snakes don't look soft.

My corn snake is named pearl, because it's white.
