Gravid Boa Died.... any ideas?? -more-

morelans Jan 30, 2004 10:29 AM

I have been checking on my possibly gravid Boas about 4 times a day and more when I am home from work. Last night I checked before bed and all were fine. This morning I check before leaving for work and I found one of my hopeful gravid DH Snow boas belly up. I just couldnt believe it. I took her straight to the vet and told them I needed to know ASAP what happened.

He just called.. he opened her up and said she was jammed full of babies and looked like NO slugs. She was only 35 days past POS, so babies were still very small and pale gray. He also said she had a perfect fat supply and he didnt see anything out of the ordinary as to cause of death.

I am sending her out for further testing and a necropsy, but I am still at a loss of the cause until then. If she had something, I need to protect the rest of my collection.

Is sudden death while Gravid common? I am just sorta floating around today.. so sad for my Venus. I have fed, cleaned and pampered her for 3 years before breeding to make sure all would go well. I thought I had done everything correct. Of course the cages are cleaned, fresh water NO mites or anything like that. Only F/T since the day I got her, temps controlled by thermostat and checked multiple times a day and so on.

Man............. this really sucks. I wish I would have waited another year now. I would glady give back all the babies to have my Venus back. Venus is on the left in the picture. Just look at how colorful she was.

it sounds like you spared nothing to make sure this was just about the best upbringing any boa could have!
it's troubling to hear how yet something like this could happen.

I have no ideas of what could've happened..I wouldn't know for sure..

What DID run through my head, only because it is still fresh, is the discussions that have been had lately about what are the health affects of powerfeeding..
what if it is only done when they are young for a year...
what would happen even if you correct the schedule...
and what are long term affects..

I don't know how you fed her, or if you consider it to be little and others may think it's much - I can't say...

I don't know if you have had her since 'day 1', or as close as that can be, or if she was in someone elses care before you..

well, just thought i'd mention this..
i'm not trying to insinuate you or anyone else powerfeeding, i'm just writing what I think...

thanks, take care - Joe

Hi Shawn,

I am sorry for your loss, I know how you feel right now. I too lost my favorite Pastel boa (Sandy) on 12/08/2003.
She was one I produced in 1998, and I was looking forward to having striped pastel baby boas this year from her.

I did have a necropsy done on her and it came back that she died from a bacterial infection in the liver called
Necrotizing Hepatitis. In other words, it dissolved her liver. My Vet thinks she may have gotten the bacterial infection from the frozen rats I have been using. I have thrown away all the old rats and I am now getting my rats from a local breeder that takes great care of his rats. I pay a little more now for my rats but now I have peace of mind about where my rats are coming from. My Vet also prescribed Baytril pills orally for all my boas every other day for about 2 weeks just for a precaution.
All my other boas seemed to be fine except for one, but he is getting better now.

Take care,
Tom McCarthy

Man, I have no idea what could have happened. I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am for your loss.... I would be sick if I walked in and found my animal like that. All of my snakes are part of my family and that would just break my heart! I really am so sorry. Please update after you find out what happened to her. jody
